Inspired by Shakesville’s “Today in Disembodied Things” feature (where Melissa McEwan most recently shared my grossed-out response to that damn Psychology Today cover), I’m giving a nod (or is that a pointed finger?) to a movie released last year that no one saw called Choke. Why draw your attention to it? ‘Cause I was in my local convenience store today and choked on this:
There is nothing about this graphic that makes me want to watch this movie.

I remember a lot of buzz about Choke last year – I can’t remember what festival it was at. When it came out here in Toronto (briefly) I saw the trailers and was like “what the heck was that?”. Looked ridiculous. Also tried reading some of the book. Also ridiculous. It certainly won’t appear on my to see list!
Okay, so maybe I need to amend my “the movie no one saw” comment (but I am going to try to see how long I can extend my “I didn’t hear about it because I had just had a baby” excuse!). Thanks for verifying my gut instinct on this one. Marketing movies is probably part art and part science, and the marketing for this one just seemed sooo repulsive, even if the movie isn’t (though I’d love to hear from a reader who did manage to sit down and watch this thing).
It really just blipped in and out of the theatre. I considered reading the book then going but nope – no time for that!
I think the poster (sadly) markets perfectly to the target audience.
