These are alive and well…and expanding…in the GTA as well. I even know someone who is an instructor. I also know a number of women who have attended the class and they all say it was slightly fun, but mostly humiliating, so I think I will pass. The ‘intrusive’ part may refer to poles with a base that sticks up bit, someone I know bashed their knee on one such obstruction.
And yes, I think it’s time for this fitness trend to die off. The idea that women should exercise and be ’sexy’ while doing it, or learn how to pole dance and entertain their partner is slightly abhorrent to me…and I studied sex and sexuality and have no hang ups about it at all. It’s just the whole idea of it that turns me off – I’d rather stick to my bootcamp thanks. However, I can also see the other side of it as a sort of liberating experience for women or a simple fun girls night out. So, maybe my thoughts are better expressed as this: as a fun girls night of laughing at each other, or as a way to become more comfortable with your sensuality, I think it’s fine. I also have no doubt that pole dancing does take strength and agility. Okay, agility, I don’t know, but strength and, um, limberness, for sure. More than I’ve got, hands down.
And let it also be known that I am heartily in favour of activities that help women to get in touch with their sexuality and claim that aspect of their lives for themselves. And I suppose for some women, they could be pleasantly surprised, while doing “the fireman,” that, hey! They can appear to be sexy! Lookit me! Sexy! So, that’s pretty well okay with me.
Maybe I shouldn’t knock it ’til I’ve tried it, but I guess I just can’t imagine trying to get fit while trying to hump a pole at the same time. Moreover, I can’t quite imagine the point of trying to get fit while humping a pole when it seems there are more efficient ways of working out. And more specifically, I just feel really suspicious of a culture that defines sexiness in very narrow ways, and that now, while exercising, we’re supposed to uphold that narrow standard. In other words, the whole thing just seems really stupid to me.
Bring on the fun, bring on the ridiculous, bring on the silly, vaguely titillating fun that bachelorette parties are all about. But let’s not kid ourselves and call pole dancing genuinely politically emancipating. Personally, momentarily liberating? Sure, maybe, with the right amount of vodka.
