Far be it from me to rain on anyone’s Pride parade, or
be the one peeing in the cornflakes. Yet, I am not wooed by
the INCorporation of trans people into the marketing sector.
Trans people, like so many “minority” demographics, are becoming a
cash cow for big business positioning themselves as progressive under the
familar banner of diversity.
In the words of Billy Joel: “If that’s what you have in mind, if that’s what its
all about, good luck movin’ up ’cause I’mmmmmmmm movin out”
Wow, that is pretty powerful. I really like the ad.
Dan I agree to an extent but when it comes to general trans acceptance, you take the victories where you find them because they are so few and far between. One also needs to remember that advertising is powerful – otherwise, corporations wouldn’t be pouring so much money into it. If that power can be channelled into a good message, I’m all for it each and everytime.
Dan: Think of it this way–the bank decided that featuring a transsexual-themed advertisement would bring in customers rather than drive them away. I’d call that progress.
I think there are two ways of looking at this ad (if not more). One, as Dan suggested, is to raise one’s eyebrow and question why the hell a bank would be presenting this ad. It’s not clear that progress can be defined as having one’s image co-opted for the commercial interests of a bank–and that’s putting it mildly.
Running at total cross-purposes with this is how this ad works strictly at the level of images in popular culture. How refreshing to have an image of a trans person wherein she is not a) a mentally unstable psychopath, b) a total mess or c) a comic punchline.
I find it hard to reconcile these two positions because I agree with them both, and yet I don’t think they themselves can agree. That’s why I enjoy hearing from readers about what YOU think.
