Wednesday’s roundup of the most depressing news

Sad Day for Tulips by left-hand

  • The most disturbing news (in a very disturbing week) that came out yesterday was the judge in Frank D’Angelo’s case finding him not guilty of sexual assault, but saying that he’s “probably” guilty.
  • Police in Woodstock, Ontario, have released a composite sketch of the woman who may have something to do with Tori Stafford’s abduction.
  • A man in Nunavut received an 18-year sentence for a brutal 2005  sexual assault on a woman in the community of Pangnirtung. It may be the longest non-homicide-related prison sentence ever imposed in the territory.
  • Any mother who has experienced the intense frustration at dealing with a newborn baby will find this chilling and absolutely heartbreaking: a Winnipeg mother, faced with a manslaughter charge in the death of her baby, is now on trial. When she called 911, Michele Camire could be heard saying, “My baby was crying earlier today. I got mad and frustrated I slammed him down when I put him down and now he’s dead.”
  • 88% of the 49 staff who work at the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter have voted to go on strike. They’ve been without a contract since April 2008. 12,000 women and children fleeing abusive homes use the shelter every year.
  • Another casualty of the recession: women who go on maternity leave are increasingly being fired or laid off before they can return to work.
  • The first American war deserter who is seeking asylum in Canada has been allowed to stay in Canada for another three months. Kimberley Rivera, who has three children, moved to Canada when she refused to be redeployed to Iraq.
  • It’s Earth Day. A magazine called Corporate Knights has deemed British Columbia Canada’s most green province, and PEI its “brownest.” I don’t know–brownest? Is brown really the opposite of green?
  • Someone alert Oprah: some more moms make some big bucks with a sensible product.

Today is a depressing day in news – especially the mat leave employment terminations. Luckily, here in Ontario, it’s not easy to terminate a woman on mat leave and in fact, many employers simply won’t do it for the reason of optics both inside and outside the workplace (although this applies more to larger workplaces). If this has happened to you, you have rights that you should know about asap and should high-tail it to a lawyer at the first opportunity.

Depressing is right. I read the item about Frank D’Angelo this morning and my heart sank. The details of the story – that it was the daughter of his longtime friend – are even more disturbing. Why are we still playing that game of he said/she said?

I had the same reaction to the comment about ‘brown’ PEI.
